Seward County

Seward County was established on March 20, 1873 (Organized on 1886) from Unorganized Territory. The county was named in honor of William Henry Seward (1801-1872), senator from New York and a leader of the anti-slavery wing of the Whig Party. Joining the Republican Party in 1855, he served as Secretary of State under Lincoln and Johnson, and arranged to purchase Alaska ("Seward's Folly") from Russia.
